a small rally was held in trafalgar square this afternoon, and as numbers grew, the march to new scotland yard began. followed by at least half a dozen police vans, and accompanied by large numbers of 'forward intelligence team' officers, the crowd of several hundred called out in solidarity with tamil protestors as they passed through parliament square and on to new scotland yard.

there, they attempted to encircle the building, and with a bit more organisation there were probably enough to do so, but it didn't quite happen.

after releasing black balloons to the sky they filled the street in front of the yard, and listened to impassioned speeches from some of the people affected by police violence.

speakers reminded us that things have not changed much in 30 years since blair peach was murdered on an anti national front demonstration by police with no-one ever brought to trial. now thirty years later, ian tomlinson was killed in G20 protests recently, and police lied to the media and would have covered it up if new film had not come to light.

chris nineham from 'stop the war coalition' spoke of increasing repression against protest and laid the blame at politicians.

doreen bishop (the mother of ricky bishop) spoke of how she was still waiting for justice eight years after police murdered her son at brixton police station. ricky bishop's sister also spoke movingly and reminded us that this issue bring should bring everyone together across class and racial divides against a new world order that is being put in place.

martin smith from the SWP compared the treatment of working class and black and asian people at the hands of the police against the polite treatment that politicians will receive even if they are questioned over their dodgy mortgages.

next, rupert sylvester, father of roger sylvester, who died at the hands of police in 1999. he has never received justice from that date. he described the long journey through the bureaucratic nightmare of ipcc, cps and courts, blocking him for all these years.

brother minka spoke from the pan-african society forum and the united friends and families campaign (who connect families of those killed in police custody). he told how he was assaulted by police in brixton recently but how he his release was forced by a huge crowd of supporters outside the police station. he reminded how this showed how through organisation the community can defend themselves against police violence. he also called for the current ipcc to be scrapped as they cover-up so many indefensible police actions.

john hunt had a few words on behalf of the green party, and told how he had wasted hours and hours of time in complaining and helping the 'investigation' by the ipcc after complaints over policing at the heathrow climate camp. once again, serious complaints had amounted to no justice.

sam rigg-david represented the sean rigg justice campaign and told how her brother was restrained by police and died shortly afterwards. the family is still calling for witnesses despite the ipcc closing the call, and taking seven months to interview officers. she also told how the family was blocked for hours before seeing the badly beaten body of her brother AFTER a post-mortem.

trade union support for the campaign has been good, and the RMT were thanked for their support and donating stewards' jackets. another union, the PCS, represented by andy lawson, affiliated to the campaign after an almost unanimous vote of 260,000 members. he told of the 1000 plus people killed in police custody over the last 40 years, and how few have been brought to justice. he reminded of the police lies over blair peach, over the hillsborough football disaster, over ian tomlinson and jean charles de menezes.

a demo was announced at the ipcc on the 10th july before a rousing surprise set by political rapper 'lowkey'.

then the sound system sparked up and the street was reclaimed while FIT officers watched and recorded for their illegal database.

rather than facilitate the protest by closing off the street, police allowed two coaches to come through the narrow road, but activists succeeded in taking control and persuaded the coaches to reverse out and find a different route. a serial of cops were just moving in to clear the road when the coaches agreed to back out, to great cheers from the crowd. the cops quickly turned back.

an open mic and dancing in the street followed.

on friday 10th july, there is a call from the 'campaign against police violence' for a mass demo outside the "independent" police complaints commission.

Several hundred people protested at New Scotland Yard on Saturday afternoon under the 'against police violence' banner. They didn't manage to quite encircle the building, but held a powerful and empowering event which is part of a growing fight back against police state Britain.
