On January 26th 1788 (now known as 'Australia Day'), the First Fleet arrived on the shores of Botany Bay. For Australia'a indigenous peoples, far from being an occasion for celebration, this represented the start of the destruction of indigenous life and cultures at the hands of British imperialism, and a long-term battle for indigenous people for justice, equality and self-determination, which continues today in the face of ongoing racism within Australian society and government policy, including the hated Northern Territory Intervention legislation.
A discussion with:
- Lauren Mellor, Intervention Rollback Action Group
- Sarah Keenan, Free Lex Wotton Campaign
Short Film Screening:
"This Is Our Country Too" : a brave new documentary that delves beyond Australia's reputation for sun, surf and sand to reveal a nation ruptured by a deep racial divide and contested history.
