No Solidarity Protest at Greek Embassy on Thursday

The protest in solidarity with the Greek uprising on Thursday, December 11, that had been called for in a posting on Indymedia UK, was well attended - by police. Hardly a protester was to be seen. The first police van was placed right outside Holland Park Station, and in front of the Greek Embassy there were more police cars of both the Met and diplomatic police and fencing had been set up, with what seemed to be one of London's infamous protest pens on the sidewalk opposite the Greek Embassy.

DAN blocks Whitehall against Welfare Reform Act

On Wednesday 3rd December, the International Day of Disabled People 2008, activists from the UK Disabled People's Direct Action Network (DAN) and London Coalition Against Poverty (LCAP) blocked traffic both ways on Whitehall, directly outside Downing Street, for over 45 minutes in protest against the new Welfare Reform Act, which replaces Incapacity Benefit with a much more punitive "Employment Support Allowance" and forces disabled people into "workfare" schemes which are effectively free labour for corporations.

Freelance Journalist

London cops friends and supporters of the defendants, Hyrbyair Marri and Faiz Baloch, staged a protest outside the Woolwich Crown Court on Monday. the protestors were calling for the trial to be halted and the charges dropped. Marri is a younger brother of Nawabzada Bala'ach Marri, member of the Baluchistan state assembly, who was assassinated by the Pakistan army on November 20 last year.

BNP Threatens Free Media

This is a repost of the current Indymedia UK Feature, even though it does not relate to London, it does relate to Indymedia.

Indymedia is yet again facing legal threats to prevent the free flow of communication, this time from a political movement known for its hostility to free speech. On the 21st November 08 Indymedia UK received an email from someone claiming to be a legal representative for the British National Party, threatening to take legal action on a number of counts for publishing information on BNP members.

After the hilarity of the "little Fuhrer", Nick Griffin, running to the safety of the Human Rights Act to try to prevent the publication of members' details, Britain's fascist party has resorted to threats.

The letter sent to Indymedia by Lee John Barnes LLB (hons), from the "BNP Legal Affairs Unit", threatens to take legal action, on the basis of theft, data protection and contempt of court, unless the list of members is removed.

The "lawyer" also attempts to shoehorn his charges into the form of anti-terrorism legislation, "The use of this information we feel is being hosted on your site for use only to incite acts of harassment, incite violence and direct targeted attacks against our members in the Leeds area". He then goes on to explain the sections of the Terrorism Act under which Indymedia would be charged.

Critical Mass Victory at the House of Lords

Since 1994, London cyclists have been gathering every single month to cycle, party and assert their right to the road - the famous Critical Mass.?

Amidst other police tactics aiming to break the d.i.y spirit of the event, the Police attempted to ban the ride in September 2005. The court case and obligatory appeals that ensued lasted for 3 years until the 26th of November 2008 when the Law Lords ruled in favour of London Critical Mass. A victory for London - but an unclear result for other Critical Masses around the country.

See report and photos of the Critical Mass on Friday 28th, three days after the Lords ruling.

Hope in Common

From one of the bellies of financial capitalism reaches us David Graeber's analysis of the current crisis, a look at the recent past of our movement and the lack of organised resistance to capitalism.

We seem to have reached an impasse. Capitalism as we know it appears to be coming apart. But as financial institutions stagger and crumble, there is no obvious alternative. Organized resistance appears scattered and incoherent; the global justice movement a shadow of its former self. There is good reason to believe that, in a generation or so, capitalism will no longer exist: for the simple reason that it?s impossible to maintain an engine of perpetual growth forever on a finite planet. Faced with the prospect, the knee-jerk reaction -- even of ?progressives? -- is, often, fear, to cling to capitalism because they simply can?t imagine an alternative that wouldn?t be even worse.

International day of Solidarity for Lex Wotton

Indymedia and the Enclosure of the Internet

There has been controversy recently on the global imc-communication and imc-tech lists over the issue of a $200,000 grant application sent to the Knight Foundation by IMC Boston to do Drupal development work for Indymedia sites.

The grant application was blocked by IMC Rosario in Argentina. As a working technical volunteer who has been building a new Indymedia website for the past year or so, I think this whole debate has raised some interesting issues related to code, corporate monopolies, and the dilemmas faced by a humble developer who's trying to help start a revolution.

RAGE documents Class War on E1 Estate

As part of a 2006 stock transfer, Swan Housing took control of The Exmouth Estate from LBTH, promising improved services to everyone.??

Shortly after residents began to witness the emergence of a two tier class system on The Exmouth Estate.? Residents who blindly approved of development decisions by Swan benefited from well maintained living conditions.?

However things were much tougher for those residents who questioned Swan's decisions, as decay due to lack of maintenance set in.

10th UFFC march in London

2008 marks the tenth year that the bereaved relatives of those who have died at the hands of the state have taken to the streets. This year the Police kept a low profile and mostly a respectful distance from the families. The optimist could say that they have learned their lesson and decided to do things differently after their actions on the 2007 parade see:

Meanwhile the cynic might suggest that they knew damn well that there would be a lot more media interest this year. Due to the de Menezes enquirey, and the presence of Jean Charles' family on the demo. And were therefore told to be on their best behaviour? There was certainly three times more journalists present than last time. Take your pick.

Below are some pictures of the day:
